Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold satire tackles the oppressive nature of female beauty and the feared consequences of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers a brilliant portrayal playing Elisabeth, an aging actress demoted to starring in an aerobics show on TV. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she seeks out a secretive and horrifying treatment titled this experimental method. This produces a youthful duplicate named Sue, culminating in a steadily more toxic connection between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit thriller features Knightley as Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for some time off from covering international wars to board a high-end voyage with a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her husband, and other affluent individuals. However when an enigmatic female falls into the sea during the evening and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Out now, the Netflix platform

Presence

Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills with this innovative paranormal narrative shot entirely from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their recent residence, the camera – representing the ghost – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He portrays a self-obsessed film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, prime time, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well without requiring a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, multiple disappearances has rendered the local kids anxious. After Finney is taken by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he fears the worst. But the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, while the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story regarding the shamed religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who states early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence capitalizing on the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet Chastain succeeds to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's additional entry by the same director presents a spy mystery as sharp like the turtlenecks used by Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked with uncovering a traitor inside the organization out of five possibilities – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars excel of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mind game of fact versus fiction unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
