The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
