The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.
We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
