Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters
Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
