Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
