From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein Document Disclosure is Mixed.
Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included no new information.
